ALMAGUIN HIGHLANDS

This area was originally a communal hunting and fishing ground, traditional to the Huron, Ojibway and Algonquin peoples. These traditional users agreed to lead early explorers along the more accessible waterways, skirting their precious hunting area in order to protect it.

THE SOUTH SHORE

Trout Creek was incorporated as a town in 1912. It began as a small settlement near the railway station called "Little Bend". After growing into a village it was known as Barkertown and later as Trout Creek. With the completion of the tote-road from Commanda, Trout Creek became the hub of a very large area, with many settlers arriving by train to begin farming. Today, market gardens operate on the peat lowlands near the town.

LAKE NOSBONSING

Lake Nosbonsing is a clean, spring fed lake, with excellent fishing winter and summer . Pickerel (walleye), pike, smallmouth bass and herring can be caught, as well as the huge muskie. The lake provides a prime muskie habitat, with numerous bays, dropoffs, shoals, points and weed beds.

LORING RESTOULE

With more than 30 lakes and rivers linked with portages, the Loring Restoule area offers a wide variety of canoe routes and excellent fishing. Take a one-day adventure or plan a longer journey through several lakes and rivers. Camping sites are located throughout the area or you can stay at Restoule Provincial Park or one of the private parks.

MATTAWA

The historic Town of Mattawa is situated on the junction of the Mattawa and Ottawa Rivers. This friendly bilingual town is the oldest settlement in the Nipissing District. Known to the Natives as "Mahtahwan", Mattawa not only has a colourful history but is also surrounded by the spectacular beauty of the upper Laurentian Mountains.

MARTEN RIVER

The Marten River area, located some 60 km (35 mi) north of North Bay on Hwy 11, is truly the "Jewel of the North" . Many travellers stop to have their photos taken with our "Big Fish" - a real eye catcher, located at one of the local restaurants.

NORTH BAY

The City of North Bay is known as The Gateway to the North. Both Trans-Canada highways meet in North Bay. Hwy. 11 (Yonge Street, the world's longest main street), takes travellers north and south, while Hwy. 17, the Voyageur Route, takes travellers east and west.

TEMAGAMI

The Temagami region encompassing Lake Temagami, includes some of Ontario's finest canoe country. Temagami (Ojibway for "Deep Water By The Shore") typifies the lakes of the region. This vast water playground has hundreds of kilometres of shoreline with over 1200 islands.

WEST NIPISSING

Early settlers were predominantly English, however, with the railway, came a large influx of French-Canadian settlers. The little settlement incorporated as the Town of Sturgeon Falls in 1895. The entire area, known as West Nipissing, was scattered with farms, sawmills, a pulp mill, steamships and numerous commercial fishing operations by 1910.
